Maybe you've been noticing things lately.
A song comes on at exactly the right moment. You have a dream about someone you lost that feels different from a regular dream. You think about someone and your phone rings. You keep seeing the same number, animal, name or completely random thing over and over.
Or maybe none of that is happening.
Maybe you just have this little feeling that there has to be more to life than just this.
And now you're curious.
About intuition. Signs. Mediumship. Consciousness. Life after death. Energy. Synchronicities. All the woo-woo stuff you may have rolled your eyes at five years ago. :)
Welcome.
You don't have to decide what any of it means.
You don't have to suddenly become a "spiritual person."
And you definitely don't need to book a mediumship reading just because you're curious about mediumship.
Sometimes curiosity is the whole point.
Sometimes a bird is just a bird. But what did you FEEL?
This is probably the biggest thread in my own experience with signs.
Sometimes a bird is just a bird.
You see a bird. Your brain registers bird. And you keep walking.
But sometimes you see a bird and something else happens.
You feel it.
Maybe there's a sudden rush of love. Or awe. Or warmth. Something makes you stop and really look at it.
And then, seemingly out of nowhere, you're thinking about your mom.
Now you're standing there thinking:
Wait. Is that my mom saying hi?
Could it still just be a bird?
Yep.
But what did you feel?
That's the part I'm interested in.
Because the bird itself may not be unusual at all.
Your experience of it was.
Your brain saw a bird.
Your body felt something.
And that feeling brought someone you love immediately into your awareness.
That's when I think it's worth paying attention.
Not analyzing the hell out of it. Not immediately Googling "spiritual meaning of a robin" and letting the internet tell you what your experience meant.
Just noticing:
That felt different.
And maybe trusting that feeling a little bit.
The meaning is personal
This is also why I'm not a huge fan of universal lists telling you what every possible "sign" means.
A cardinal doesn't automatically mean Grandma.
A butterfly doesn't automatically mean transformation.
A dime doesn't automatically mean Spirit.
Maybe your dad collected dimes.
Maybe your mom loved cardinals.
Maybe your grandfather called you Butterfly, or Bug or you always went to the butterfly garden together when you were little.
The meaning belongs to you.
And sometimes the thing itself isn't even particularly meaningful.
It's the feeling that arrives with it.
That little rush of love.
A sudden memory.
Goosebumps.
A weird moment of Oh my God.
A feeling that someone is close.
That's the part I'd pay attention to.
Not every bird is a messenger.
Not every song on the radio was queued up by your dead grandmother.
Not every coincidence has some giant cosmic meaning.
But when something ordinary suddenly feels anything but ordinary, you don't have to immediately explain that away either.
You can just say:
Huh. That felt different.
And stay curious.
Start noticing before you start explaining
I think we have a tendency to want an answer immediately. I did. (ok, and sometimes still do …)
Was that a sign?
Was that my intuition?
Was that just a coincidence?
Am I imagining this?
I don't think you have to know right away.
In fact, sometimes trying too hard to figure it out is exactly when your brain gets involved and starts making everything much more complicated.
Instead, pay attention to the experience itself.
What happened?
What were you thinking about right before it happened?
What did you feel?
Who came into your mind?
Did the feeling happen first and the analyzing come afterward?
You don't need to turn every experience into something spiritual.
Just start noticing.
Pay attention to what you're curious about
Maybe signs aren't even the thing that started this for you.
Maybe you're fascinated by near-death experiences.
Maybe it's mediumship.
Maybe you've started wondering about consciousness and whether it continues after the body dies.
Maybe it's intuition and those moments when you somehow know something before you have any logical reason to know it.
Maybe it's dreams.
Maybe it's synchronicities and those weird coincidences that feel a little too coincidental.
Maybe you've lost someone and can't shake the feeling that they're not completely gone.
Or maybe you have no idea what started it.
You just keep thinking:
There has to be more going on here.
Follow that curiosity.
Read about it. Listen to people talk about it. Explore different ideas. Ask questions.
You don't have to believe something to be interested in it.
And you don't have to agree with everything you encounter along the way. I don’t.
Actually, please don't.
Start paying attention to yourself
This might be my favorite part of exploring any of this.
Because eventually you stop only looking for things happening around you and start noticing what's happening inside you.
Have you ever had an immediate thought like:
I should call her.
Something feels off.
I need to take a different route.
I swear that was Dad.
And then about half a second later your brain arrives with a PowerPoint presentation explaining why you're being ridiculous?
That's the part I find fascinating.
There's sometimes a little flash of knowing before all the analyzing starts.
That doesn't mean every thought is intuition.
It doesn't mean every coincidence is a sign.
And it definitely doesn't mean every random thing that happens is the Universe trying to send you a coded message.
Sometimes we're anxious.
Sometimes our imaginations are running wild.
Sometimes our brains are doing what human brains do.
But sometimes...
something feels different.
And instead of immediately asking someone else what it means, try noticing what happens inside you first.
(are you still reading this blog post? I am so proud of you and congratulations you are interested in woo-woo!)
What about signs from people who have died?
This is one of the things people ask me about most.
How do I know if it's really them?
I wish I could give you a perfect checklist.
I can't.
And I'm not sure anyone can.
For me, it comes back to the same thing:
What did you experience and how did it FEEL?
Maybe you're driving and a song comes on that you haven't heard in twenty years.
It's the song your dad used to sing terribly in the kitchen.
And before you've even had time to think about it, you feel this huge wave of love and you're laughing and crying at the same time.
Could Spotify have randomly served you that song?
Of course.
Does that automatically make what you felt meaningless?
I don't think so.
I'm not interested in talking you out of an experience that felt meaningful to you just because neither of us can prove what really caused it.
You don't need a medium to explore any of this
This is something I really want people to understand.
I don't believe mediums have some special VIP access to Spirit that everyone else was denied.
You can explore your own intuition.
You can pay attention to your dreams.
You can notice synchronicities.
You can learn about consciousness and life after death.
You can read about mediumship without ever having a reading.
And you can talk to the people you love who have died.
Seriously.
If you miss your mom, talk to her.
If you want to tell your dad something, tell him.
If you have absolutely no idea whether anyone can hear you, you can still say it.
You don't need me standing in the middle of that relationship.
I actually think one of the coolest things that can come from exploring all of this is learning to trust your own experiences a little more.
A mediumship reading can be one way to explore connection.
It's not the only way.
Mediumship is part of a much bigger conversation for me.
What are we?
What happens when we die?
What is consciousness?
Why do we sometimes know things we shouldn't or couldn’t possibly know?
Why do certain moments feel so different from others?
And what if the relationships we have with people don't simply disappear because their bodies aren't here anymore?
I don't have all those answers.
I don't think anyone does.
That's kind of why they're interesting.
You don't have to figure out what you believe
I think we get uncomfortable sitting in the middle.
We want something to be true or false.
Real or fake.
Spiritual or scientific.
A sign or a coincidence.
But maybe you don't have to decide yet.
Maybe that bird was Mom.
Maybe it wasn't.
Maybe you're allowed to simply notice that you were missing her, a bird landed outside your window, you suddenly felt this overwhelming sense of love and appreciation, and the first person who came into your mind was her.
Maybe you don't have to prove what happened next.
Maybe the feeling matters most.
I don't think curiosity is something we need to rush through so we can get to certainty.
I'm not even sure certainty is the goal.
Pay attention.
Ask questions.
Notice what you notice.
Feel what you feel.
Learn about the things that fascinate you.
Stay open without feeling like you have to believe everything.
And maybe trust yourself a little more along the way.
There is an enormous amount about consciousness, life, death and connection that we don't understand.
I think we're allowed to wonder about it. And not care if we look like idiots trying to figure it all out.
Just come curious.
Want to keep exploring?
