Never Been to a Medium Before? Here’s What Actually Happens in a Reading

If you’ve never been to a medium before, you probably have questions.

Do I need to bring anything? Am I supposed to tell you who I want to hear from? What if nobody comes through? What if someone comes through that I don’t want to hear from? Are you going to tell me my future? Are you going to know all my secrets? Are you going to give me bad news?

And maybe the biggest one:

*What in the &@! actually happens during a mediumship reading?

First, you’re not alone. A huge percentage of the people who come to see me have never been to a medium before.

So let’s take some of the mystery out of it.

You don't need to prepare for a mediumship reading

Really.

You don't need to bring photographs, belongings or a list of names. You don't need to tell me who died or who you're hoping to hear from.

Actually, I prefer that you don't give me information beforehand.

Part of evidential mediumship is allowing the information to come through without knowing the story first. I want you to recognize who is coming through based on the evidence I'm relaying to you.

My ego likes to be right, and I do not want my ego involved in this process. My ego brain goes off to play Wordle while I just tell you what I'm getting, one piece of evidence at a time.

Come as you are.

You don't even have to know exactly what you believe.

Just come curious.

So how does a mediumship reading actually work?

The easiest way I've found to explain mediumship is with a radio analogy.

Think of your body as the radio and your consciousness as the signal, the radio waves.

When a radio breaks, the signal doesn't disappear. The radio just isn't able to receive it anymore.

Mediumship works from the idea that something similar happens when we die. The physical body is gone, but consciousness continues.

During a reading, I'm basically the radio.

Which is weird. But here we are.

I get quiet and pay attention. I "tune in" to what I'm receiving from the signal. Information can come through as images, words, names, memories, physical sensations, personality traits, relationships or sometimes just a very strong sense of knowing something.

Every Spirit communicates differently, so no two readings look exactly alike.

First comes evidence

For me, this part matters.

I don't want to simply tell you that your grandmother is standing behind you and loves you.

You probably already know your grandmother loves you.

I want to give you information that helps you recognize who I'm actually connecting with.

That might include:

  • personality traits

  • memories

  • relationships

  • names

  • how someone passed

  • things they did or said

  • objects or places connected to them

  • completely random details that mean absolutely nothing to me but mean something to you

That's the evidence part of evidential mediumship.

Once we've established who we're connecting with, the reading can move into something I find even more interesting:

What do they want you to know?

A reading isn't just about proving someone is still around

Evidence is important because it helps establish the connection.

But I don't think evidence is the entire point.

The connection can bring messages, perspective, reassurance, humor, healing or sometimes simply the feeling of being known by someone you thought you had lost.

That's why I think of my work as:

Evidence → Connection → Message → Meaning

Evidence is the doorway.

What that connection means for the living is where things get really interesting.

Can you guarantee who will come through?

No.

And I think it's important for any medium to be clear about that.

I can't call your dad, grandmother, spouse or best friend on demand. Mediumship doesn't work like dialing a phone number.

Spirit leads the reading.

Sometimes the person you're hoping for comes through immediately. Sometimes someone else comes first. Sometimes the connection unfolds in a way neither of us expected.

I won't pretend someone is there just because you want them to be.

For my private readings, if we aren't establishing a strong enough connection within roughly the first 15 minutes, I'll tell you. I'm not interested in forcing a reading that isn't working.

What if someone comes through that I don't want to hear from?

You still have boundaries.

Spirit may lead the reading, but you have agency too.

If someone comes through whom you don't want to engage with, you don't have to.

Mediumship shouldn't feel frightening or like you're giving up control.

Will you tell me my future?

That's not how I work.

I'm both psychic and a medium, so sometimes information about your life may come through during a reading. But I don't believe the future is one fixed thing waiting for me to tell you what happens next.

We have choices. We have free will. Other people have choices. Things change.

If we're meant to talk about a situation you're struggling with, we will. If Spirit wants to offer advice or help with something you're currently going through, we'll talk about that too.

I've found that's often part of why Spirit comes through in the first place. They want to help, encourage, apologize or simply recognize what you're going through and reassure you.

I can tune into your energy and pass along what I'm receiving, but I don't provide medical advice or replace doctors, therapists, attorneys or other professionals.

What does a mediumship reading actually feel like?

Usually much more conversational than people expect.

We talk. I share what I'm receiving. I may ask whether something makes sense to you.

Sometimes something lands immediately. Sometimes you're completely confused and text me three days later because you finally figured out what the hell I was talking about.

There can be tears.

There can also be a lot of laughter.

People who have died don't suddenly stop having personalities.

Do you have to believe in mediumship for a reading to work?

No.

You don't have to walk into my office convinced that life after death is real.

Curious and open is enough.

What I don't do are readings for someone whose goal is to challenge me, test me or make me prove that mediumship exists. If you want to spend your money testing a medium, go for it. I'm just not your girl.

That's not what a reading with me is for.

But if you're sitting somewhere in the middle thinking, I have absolutely no idea what I believe about this, but I'm open and I'm curious...

You're my kind of person.

Zoom or in person?

Both.

I offer private mediumship readings in person in Huntington Woods, Michigan, in the Metro Detroit area, and online via Zoom.

And yes, Zoom works just as well.

I actually started working professionally during COVID, so everything was on Zoom. Nothing was in person.

You know what I learned?

Energy is energy.

Spirit doesn't care if we're in person or on Zoom. Your loved ones aren't sitting around waiting for you to physically bring them to my office. They meet us where we are. :)

Think about how you can close your eyes and instantly remember a moment with someone you love, even if they're thousands of miles away. Physical distance doesn't change your ability to connect with that memory.

Mediumship works similarly for me. You can be sitting across from me in Michigan or thousands of miles away on Zoom.

Apparently Spirit isn't particularly concerned with Wi-Fi. :)

Spirit is kind of its own Wi-Fi.

One last thing

You don't need a medium to be connected to the people you love.

That's something I really want people to understand.

I don't believe mediums have some special access to Spirit that everyone else lacks.

People experience connection all the time through dreams, memories, intuition, signs, sudden knowing and those strange little moments that are difficult to explain away.

My job isn't to convince you that I'm special.

If anything, I hope a reading leaves you a little more open to the possibility that love and connection may be much bigger than we realize.

You don't have to know exactly what you believe.

Just come curious.
